Certification Courses

PA Safety Inspection Mechanic

Individuals who are at least 18 years of age and hold a valid driver’s license can make application to this program which prepares the student to become a Certified PA Safety Inspection Mechanic in 1, 2, or 3 categories. It is recommended that applicants have an understanding of basic auto mechanics, including brakes and alignment, to succeed in this program. A valid driver’s license is required.  Classes consist of four (4) four-hour group sessions. The tactile test is administered individually within 30 days of the last class. The class tuition of $200.00 includes classroom instruction, book fee and tools class.

The following additional fees will be applied for each category tested:

  • $40 Category 1 (Passenger cars/trucks 17,000 lbs or less/trailers 10,000 lbs or less)

  • $40 Category 2 Motorcycles (must hold a valid Motorcycle license)

  • $80 Category 3 (Buses/trucks over 17,000 lbs/trailers over 10,000 lbs)

In order to be registered for the course, payment must be made in full and a completed MV 409 must be received prior to the first night of class.  Visit PennDOT’s website to view a copy of Publication 45 Vehicle Equipment and Inspection Regulations Manual. PA Vehicle Emissions Inspector – Certification

This training program is mandated by the PA Department of Transportation for all inspectors and automotive repair technicians. Click here to obtain the MV501 application.

8 Hours (2 classes) are required.
Course Fee: $90

*An additional fee of $39.99 for study materials and exams, must be paid to PennDOT via their website,  Pennsylvania Inspection Mechanic Training and Certification Portal, a minimum of 3 days prior to the beginning of class

There is a Retest Fee of  $20

PA Enhanced Vehicle Safety Inspection Certification (CAT 4)

Category 4 encompasses the Enhanced Vehicle Safety Inspector (EVSI) and Certified Document Reviewer (CDR) designations for state-approved vehicle inspection locations. This includes new procedures and requirements for the inspection and titling of vehicles requiring a branded title (re-constructed, specially constructed, modified, flood, recovered theft, collectible vehicles and street rods.) This course includes review and testing to become either an Enhanced Vehicle Safety Inspector(EVSI) or a Certified Document Reviewer (CDR).

Students must come prepared by reading the self-study manual prior to class. The Pub 645 manual is available for download at PennDOT’s website.
The completed MV409S application must be received prior to the night of class.
