Kylee Stehman, a Level 3 Heavy Equipment Operations (HEO) student and Exeter senior, is paving the way for her future with co-op experience at Brubacher Excavating. After a successful summer internship with the company, she now works four days a week at Brubacher, earning $22 per hour, while attending BCTC one day a week to continue her studies.
Despite recent weather slowing on-site work, Kylee is busy participating in Brubacher’s training classes, learning essential skills in trenching, excavating, and confined space procedures. She’s eager to return to the worksite as soon as conditions improve.
Reflecting on her time at BCTC, Kylee shared, “Applying to BCTC’s HEO program was the best decision I ever made. It has prepared me for a career I love.” She acknowledged that learning to read blueprints was initially challenging but praised her instructors for breaking down complex concepts and teaching her how to solve problems in real-world excavating situations. “Now, I love operating construction vehicles. I feel independent and can figure things out,” she added.
Kylee was also appointed Superintendent of the PM HEO program by her HEO instructor. This leadership position included overseeing Level 1, 2, and 3 students at the Quarry, ensuring a safe work environment, and making sure all assigned tasks at the Quarry were completed.
Kylee’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed by her colleagues. She recalled one co-worker who was initially unsure about a woman entering the industry. “When he saw how hard-working I am, he completely changed his attitude,” she said with pride.
Recently, Kylee returned to BCTC as a representative of Brubacher Excavating during the Diesel and Heavy Equipment Career Day, encouraging students to explore opportunities in the skilled trades. “I want to help students get the confidence to get out and get a job for the summer or start their career. There are so many opportunities for skilled workers!”
With her passion, skills, and determination, Kylee is well on her way to a successful career in heavy equipment operations, proving that hard work and hands-on experience can lead to exciting opportunities.
