Cultivating Success

Myles Davis, a 3rd-year Horticulture student, recently clinched the prestigious FFA Eastern Regional Star Placement award in Agriculture, marking a significant milestone in his journey toward a flourishing career in horticulture.

Berks Career & Technology Center (BCTC) is renowned for its innovative programs that bridge the gap between education and real-world applications. The Horticulture program provides students with hands-on experience, fostering a deep understanding of plant cultivation, floral and landscape design, and sustainable agricultural practices. Students like Myles are encouraged to explore their passions and develop practical skills that will serve them well in the ever-evolving field of horticulture.

Myles, a determined and green-thumbed individual, wanted to learn about the Nursery business, specifically Christmas trees since he was 8 years old. Myles stated, “I used to help my grandfather on his farm. He grew corn, soy, beans, and hay, but I always loved trees.”  He added, “recently I’ve become interested in root-ball trees. Preparing the root-ball properly for replanting makes all the difference of the tree’s survival in a new location.”

From day one at BCTC, Myles’ enthusiasm for plants and agriculture set him apart. Under the guidance of experienced instructor, Mrs. Kelly Piccioni, Myles honed his skills in plant propagation, soil management, and pest control, highlighting a commitment to excellence in every aspect of horticulture.

The FFA Eastern Regional Star Placement award is a prestigious recognition celebrating outstanding students in agriculture. This award specifically highlights achievements in work experience and placement programs, acknowledging individuals who have demonstrated exemplary dedication and proficiency in their chosen agricultural pathway.

Myles emerged as the deserving winner of the FFA Eastern Regional Star Placement award in Agriculture and was recognized at the FFA Mid-Winter Convention at the 2024 Farm Show. This accolade is a testament to his hard work, resilience, and the practical knowledge gained through the BCTC’s Horticulture program and through his work at Geissler Tree Farm. Myles explains, “I started working at Geissler’s Tree Farm as seasonal employee, and then I was invited back to work over the summer. Now I am on co-op at Geissler’s where I help with Christmas tree sales.”  Myles continues, “my job includes helping customers bring down their cut Christmas tree from the field to the barn. Next, we shake the tree and release the dead needles, bale the tree so the customer can transport it easier, and drill the trunk of the tree for a tree stand if needed.”

Buoyed by his recent success, Myles envisions a future filled with opportunities in the realm of horticulture. Armed with practical experience, a passion for sustainable agriculture, and recognition from the FFA, he is poised to make a lasting impact on the industry. Whether it is working at the Christmas tree farm, leading landscape design projects, or contributing to agricultural innovation, the possibilities are vast for this emerging horticultural star. The future looks green and promising for Myles, and his story serves as an inspiration to all aspiring horticulturists eager to make their mark in the world of plants and cultivation.
